What is the Niobium-based battery?
First and foremost, batteries are classified acording to type of charge transported, therefore the so called Niobium-based battery is in reality an advanced lithium-ion battery made with engineered Niobium components, some of which are:
Anodes: Niobium Titanium Oxide (NTO); Echion’s Mixed Niobium Oxide (XNO™); Niobium Tungsten Oxide (NWO); Niobia (Nanostructured Niobium); MNb₃O₈ (M=H, Li, Na, K) layered polyniobate.
Cathodes: Niobium doping/coating for Co-reduced or Co-free, Li-rich and Mn-based cathodes; lithium-rich Niobium based cation-disordered rock-salt structure (Li₃NbO₄)
Solid Electrolyte: Niobium layers on LiLaZrOx composite; Nb-S glass.

What are the benefits of Niobium technology in batteries?
In battery technology, materials chemistry is key and Niobium is playing a decisive role in achieving the ever pressing demands for batteries with better performance, fast charging capabilities, longer durability and at the same time maintaining safety as a number one priority.
In advanced lithium-ion batteries, Niobium can be used for significant benefits.
Niobium is being used as a dopant and as a coating material to develop cobalt-reduced or cobalt-free, lithium-rich and manganese-based new cathodes with higher performance, improved electronic conductivity and longer-term stability.
Furthermore Niobium can be used in the formulation of new anode materials for high power, fast charging, wider operation temperatures, long life and safety.
In advanced lithium-ion batteries, Niobium can be used for significant benefits.

In which technical readiness level (TRL) is the technology currently?
With more than 10 Years of Research and Development programs, the application of Niobium in advanced Li-ion batteries has shown promising results.
Currently CBMM has a research and development pilot plant for battery materials of approximately 1000 m² of built-in area with state-of-art process and characterization equipment, and has more than 40 on-going technological projects distributed around the world.
By 2025 our plan is to have 3 more industrial plants of niobium oxide products for battery applications and by 2030 have a total production of over 20 kt.
As a key strategic point, CBMM has also partnered with different companies to accelerate and validate the Niobium Technologies.
With our Chinese partners the application of Niobium as a dopant for LMO and LCO cathodes have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 9 and 8 respectively.
For anodes, with differents compositions, the TRL is around 7. With the possibility of requesting samples for prototypes.
Other applications include supercapacitors with a TLR of 7 and Niobium coated nanocrystals (for NMC; LNMO; LFP) with a TLR of 4.

When will it be available for commercialization?
CBMM does not intend to produce the batteries itself as it supplies the niobium raw material and active components for the fabrication of anodes, cathodes and other battery components (Please see our portfolio of products).
Niobium products for cathodes are already under commercialization in the Chinese market, and are in an advanced stage of development in the Japanese and South Korean markets as well.
As for the anodes and other battery products, we are working closely with our partners so that these technologies will be available for the initial customers during 2023 and enter the market with mass production by 2024 onwards.
